Foreword

The Cimetière des Pamplemousses booklet is finally available in his internet version in this website. A complete updating of the deceased listing has been conducted as well as recent and more thoroughly researches at Mauritius National Archives. A few explanations for enlightening people waiting this moment eagerly:

• End of 1996, creation of « les Amis du Cimetière des Pamplemousses » Committee
• 1997-1998, record of tombs, mapping of sites, zones demarcation and setting up of a new cemetery plan.
• Rehabilitation of French and English tombs and outstanding monuments.
• Clearing of the cemetery, elimination of trees causing damage to monuments.
• Repair of the cemetery gate.
• The editing of the booklet, which was to be carried out in a short time, was considerably delayed because the President of the Committee wished it to be a Historical Book covering the colonisation of the island, Pamplemousses and its surroundings. As most of the members were for a booklet covering only the cemetery with emphasis on the buried people, the tombs’ architecture and few biographical notices on important personalities of the country buried in the cemetery, the booklet lost its raison d’être and its editing was stopped.
• So part of the committee took over the editing with the initial thinking, dealing with the cemetery, its history, the list of buried people as complete as possible, the architecture of the tombs, the epitaphs, a few biographies and statistics derived from compilation of the tombs listed such as the origin and occupation of the buried people.

The reader is notified that the internet version is a simplified one for practical reasons. A hardcopyversion entitled " Le Vieux Cimetière des Pamplemousses et son histoire" will be released soon.

We hope that this booklet will be useful to all those interested in the history of Mauritius specially genealogists whose ancestors are on the list.
